Ebonyi Youths Demand End to Political Violence Ahead of 2027 Elections
Hundreds of youths in Ebonyi State have marched peacefully through the capital, Abakaliki, to call for an end to political violence and intimidation as the 2027 general elections approach. The protesters, part of the Concerned Ebonyi Youth for Democracy group, came from all 13 local government areas in the state.
The demonstrators displayed placards with messages such as, “Democracy Needs Peaceful Ideas, Not Weapons” and “Protect Freedom of Speech in Ebonyi.” They demanded a safe political environment where all citizens can participate without fear.
A spokesperson for the group emphasized that they would not tolerate any attempts to undermine their rights. “Our constitutional rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly are not negotiable,” the spokesperson stated.
The group expressed concerns over reports of violence and harassment aimed at opposition members in the state. They insisted that every citizen, regardless of their political party, should be able to engage in the electoral process safely.
Another youth coordinator highlighted the need for opposition parties to campaign freely and connect with voters without the threat of violence. “Opposition parties must be allowed to campaign safely, present their platforms, and engage with voters without constant threat of violence,” the coordinator said.
This march is part of a broader effort by young people in Ebonyi to promote accountability and encourage peaceful participation in the upcoming elections.
