Ogun and Federal Government Investigate Gas Leaks in Ijebu-Ode

The Ogun State Government and the Federal Government have started a joint investigation into ongoing methane gas leaks in Ijebu-Ode and nearby areas. This decision follows four reported incidents that have alarmed local residents.

A team from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), along with development partners, is working to find the source of the gas emissions and suggest ways to stop them from happening again. The state government announced this in a statement on Tuesday, signed by Kayode Akinmade, the Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun.

The investigation team, led by NUPRC Deputy Director Omonedo Prosper, is looking into the patterns of the gas emissions and possible sources. They are also reviewing previous actions taken by the state government. Residents have reported unpleasant smells in their communities, raising worries about potential health risks.

The NUPRC team is prepared to collaborate with the state government and other agencies to determine the cause of the emissions and find a long-term solution. Akinmade emphasized the government’s commitment to sharing the investigation’s findings quickly, implementing preventive measures, and providing health support to affected communities.

Areas like Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu East, and Odogbolu are under focus as investigations continue. Akinmade stated that working with the Federal Government and research institutions is essential. He assured residents that their safety is a top priority and that the government will keep engaging with relevant agencies until the issue is fully resolved.

Professor Ikhane Phillips, from Olabisi Onabanjo University, noted that scientific tests would help identify the gas’s composition and source. The Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, also mentioned that the state is closely coordinating with the Federal Government to tackle the problem and has urged residents to stay informed and take precautions during unpleasant odours.
