Tinubu Acknowledges Petrol Subsidy Removal Will Affect Nigerian Households
President Bola Tinubu has recognized that removing the petrol subsidy will lead to difficulties for many Nigerian households. He stated that his administration is working to provide affordable transportation options to help ease this burden.
In a recent post on his verified social media account, Tinubu discussed the government’s efforts to reduce transportation costs. This includes the introduction of buses, electric vehicles, and compressed natural gas (CNG) transport initiatives across various states.
According to Tinubu, the Federal Government is collaborating with state governments and private investors to enhance services under the National Affordable CNG Transportation Programme. He noted that Ekiti State has received 15 new buses, Lagos has 20, and Akwa Ibom has 50 buses ready for operation. Additionally, Katsina State has introduced 30 CNG hybrid buses and 200 electric tricycles, while Kano has received 30 CNG buses and five electric buses.
More initiatives are planned for Edo State, and Tinubu mentioned that Kaduna’s fleet of 100 CNG buses has already transported over three million passengers. He also highlighted that more than 400 certified centers have converted over 120,000 vehicles to run on CNG, with efforts underway to improve refueling infrastructure.
The President acknowledged the strain that rising petrol prices are putting on families and businesses. He stated that the government has waived over ₦3.3 trillion in fuel taxes and duties to help alleviate the impact of these rising prices. Additionally, NNPC Retail will not take its profit margin for 30 days, focusing on public transport operators, while the government aims to set a price ceiling of ₦1,350 per litre on wholesale petrol costs.
Tinubu emphasized the necessity of providing immediate relief while ensuring that future generations are not burdened. He urged political leaders to be transparent about the costs and sustainability of their campaign promises, warning that unrealistic commitments could create problems for the future.
He expressed hope that the stories shared by beneficiaries of the transportation initiatives would inspire further expansion of services to more communities across Nigeria.
