Wike Urges Politicians to Avoid Creating Grievances for Power

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, spoke out against politicians who create false grievances to gain power. He made this statement during a keynote address in Abuja on Thursday, where he discussed the need for fairness and equity in Nigerian politics.

Wike emphasized that leaders should not manipulate grievances for political gain. He warned that such tactics could lead to division within the country. He stated that while identity politics might rally support quickly, it could ultimately harm national unity.

He also highlighted a worrying trend: the decline in voter turnout for presidential elections. According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, turnout dropped significantly from 53.7% in 2011 to just 26.7% in 2023. Wike expressed concern that citizens are often neglected until elections approach.

Wike called for a shift in political focus from “whose turn is it?” to “what is right?” He raised important questions about political zoning and representation, stressing the need for competent leaders regardless of their background.

He outlined several steps needed for national renewal, including strengthening political parties, ensuring fair elections, and improving education and economic opportunities. Wike urged communities to hold themselves to high standards as they demand accountability from others.

During the event, he praised the Idoma Hall of Fame for promoting community values and encouraging future generations to contribute positively to society.
