Miva Pro-Chancellor Advocates Online Learning to Enhance University Access in Nigeria

Online learning is seen as a vital way to remove barriers to higher education in Nigeria, allowing people to earn university degrees while managing their jobs, businesses, and family duties. Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, Pro-Chancellor of Miva Open University, shared this view during the university’s matriculation ceremony in Abuja.

Speaking to new students, Dr. Olowolafe criticized traditional universities for forcing individuals to choose between their personal lives and academic growth. He pointed out that this situation limits the country’s potential and talent. He stated, “For generations, higher education in Nigeria demanded a heavy sacrifice: you had to put your life on hold.”

Dr. Olowolafe noted that the old way of studying for a few years and relying on that one degree for a lifetime is outdated. He emphasized that in today’s fast-paced world, continuous learning is essential. He encouraged students to connect their work experiences and community involvement with their studies to address real-world challenges.

However, he also warned that the flexibility of online learning requires strong self-discipline and motivation. “The hard part of online learning is not starting – it is staying the course when life gets busy,” he said. He humorously added that students might face challenges with their internet service providers during their studies.

To support students facing financial difficulties, Dr. Olowolafe highlighted the Gbemisola Olowolafe Miva Scholarship, which aims to ensure that academic ability, rather than financial status, determines who can study. This initiative is a partnership between the Tunji Olowolafe Foundation and Miva Open University.

Reflecting on the university’s progress, he mentioned the graduation of Miva’s first group of students in Lagos last June as a testament to the institution’s mission to make higher education more accessible in Nigeria. He expressed confidence that the new students would successfully complete their studies.

The ceremony also featured a keynote address from Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, Assistant Director-General of the World Health Organization. Other notable attendees included Miva’s Founder and Chancellor, Sim Shagaya, and various university officials and families.
