Tinubu Supports Nigerian Army’s Move to Offensive Operations

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his support for the Nigerian Army’s transition from static defense to more mobile offensive operations. This change is led by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.

Tinubu highlighted that this shift is part of a larger plan to reform the military, focusing on professionalism, adaptability, combat readiness, and resilience. He shared these views in the introduction of a book titled “The Shaibu Doctrine: Mission Command and the Remaking of Nigeria’s Army at War,” which was co-authored by two military experts.

The President emphasized that the Armed Forces have a crucial role in securing the nation and fostering an environment where democracy and development can flourish. He stated, “As Commander-in-Chief, I have charged our Armed Forces with one mission: to secure Nigeria so that democracy and development can thrive.”

Tinubu described the new command philosophy as a significant change from traditional military practices. He noted that the Army is now focusing on offensive strategies rather than just defense. The reforms also include adopting new technologies, improving soldier welfare, and emphasizing military ethics.

The book discusses Shaibu’s leadership style, particularly how it enhances the Army’s effectiveness through mission command and troop welfare. One of the authors, Dr. Muhammed Sani Abubakar, explained that their goal was to document Shaibu’s philosophy, which they believe is essential for addressing the Army’s current challenges.

Abubakar outlined that the philosophy is based on five key pillars aimed at prioritizing soldier welfare and morale. He also called for better collaboration between the Army and local security forces, as well as increased air support for ground troops to improve their operational capabilities.
