Over 100,000 Nigerians Show Interest in Tinubu’s Housing Initiative Nationwide

The Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Cities initiative has attracted over 100,000 expressions of interest from Nigerians. This interest comes from people in various sectors, including traders and small business owners in cities like Abuja, Kano, and Lagos.

The program, launched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is a partnership between the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and several construction companies. The flagship project is in Karsana, Abuja, where 2,400 housing units are nearing completion.

A key part of the initiative is to help more Nigerians access mortgages. The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria has been directed to extend mortgage options to contributors of the National Housing Fund. So far, more than 2,000 Nigerians have benefited, with over 10,000 applications being processed.

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Engr. Dr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma, is focused on reforming the housing sector to prioritize workers and the informal sector. He aims to provide at least 5,000 mortgages each year and has set up a committee to improve the housing sector overall.

The initiative is expanding beyond Abuja. In Kano, over 350 housing units are complete, with more under construction. In Lagos, development is underway for 2,004 units along Monastery Road, with the first 550 expected by April 2027. New projects are also planned in other states, aiming to house 100 million Nigerians.

Funding for the initiative comes from various sources, including private developers and financial institutions. Many organizations are also supporting their employees by covering initial costs to help them participate in the housing program.
