Presidency and Atiku’s Camp Clash Over Tinubu’s Saudi Arabia Trip
With just over two months until the 2027 general election, a dispute has erupted between the Presidency and the camp of Atiku Abubakar regarding President Bola Tinubu’s recent trip to Saudi Arabia for Umrah, a pilgrimage.
Ademola Oshodi, the President’s Special Assistant on International Affairs, stated that the trip is not political but a personal journey for prayer and reflection on behalf of Nigeria and its citizens. He emphasized that being allowed to visit the Kaaba, a sacred site in Islam, reflects Nigeria’s standing in the world and Tinubu’s commitment to his people.
Oshodi dismissed suggestions that the trip was a tactic to win back support from northern voters, asserting that the significance of the journey transcends political motives. He noted that Tinubu has previously performed Umrah and Hajj, which are important religious practices for Muslims.
In contrast, Atiku’s spokesman, Phrank Shaibu, criticized the trip as a political maneuver aimed at deceiving Nigerians who are suffering from economic hardships. He argued that such religious journeys should remain personal and not be used for political gain.
Shaibu claimed that Tinubu’s policies have worsened the living conditions for many Nigerians, stating that the President’s visit to Saudi Arabia was more about his political ambitions than genuine faith. He expressed concern over the rising hunger and insecurity in the country, questioning the sincerity of Tinubu’s intentions.
The exchange highlights the ongoing tensions as the election approaches, with both sides accusing each other of politicizing important issues.
