Peter Obi Condemns Brutal Murder of Kano Commentator Dan Shagamu, Demands Immediate Justice

The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the brutal assassination of Kano-based social media commentator and public affairs analyst, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu.

Dan Shagamu was murdered late at night inside his residence located in the Gaida Quarters of Kumbotso Local Government Area, Kano State, after armed assailants forced their way into the property and attacked him with sharp objects. While local security and police divisions have since detained two suspects in connection with the crime and launched forensic investigations, the incident has sent shockwaves through civil society and media circles.

Reacting to the tragic development via a public statement, Obi decried the growing resort to violence to settle ideological or public discourse differences, asserting that civic commentary must never be met with bloodshed.

“I am deeply saddened by the killing of social media commentator, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, in his home in Kano,” Obi stated. “No disagreement, criticism, or neighbourhood dispute can ever justify the taking of a human life. Those who speak up, express their opinions, or hold different views must not be made to live in fear”.

The former Anambra governor called on the Kano State Government and relevant security command structures to execute an uncompromised, transparent, and meticulous probe to unravel the full motive behind the attack and ensure every individual culpable is brought to justice.

Obi emphasized that the protection of citizens’ lives is paramount, pointing out that Nigeria’s ground norm guarantees every individual the unalienable right to freedom of expression. He warned that any attempt to silence critical voices through terror or extrajudicial actions strikes at the root of national democracy and must be firmly resisted by the state.

Extending his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and professional colleagues of the late commentator, Obi prayed for the repose of his soul and urged security agencies to step up protective measures for public commentators and independent voices across the country.
