The Osun State Police Command organized a mental health awareness lecture for its officers to support their psychological well-being. This event took place to mark World Mental Health Day on October 10.
According to a statement from the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, the lecture aimed to highlight the significance of mental health in policing. Officers often face stressful situations, security challenges, and other pressures that can affect their mental health.
At the event, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Dr) Iyiola Ogundimite, who leads the Police Hospital in Osun, encouraged officers to prioritize their mental health and seek help when needed. She emphasized that good mental health is crucial for making sound decisions and engaging respectfully with the public.
Guest lecturer Dr. T. Ayantola, a psychiatrist from the Federal Psychiatric Hospital in Abeokuta, discussed the importance of managing stress, getting enough rest, building healthy relationships, and identifying psychological distress early.
Officers were encouraged to support each other and avoid stigmatizing colleagues facing mental health issues. They were also urged to seek assistance from qualified professionals when necessary.
Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Zungura highlighted that mental health is a key part of police welfare. He stated that officers who are mentally and emotionally healthy can perform their duties more effectively while respecting citizens’ rights. Zungura advised officers to adopt healthy coping strategies and maintain a good work-life balance.
The command remains committed to promoting the overall well-being of its personnel to enhance service delivery and public safety.
