Ondo State Boosts Private Waste Operators to Improve Sanitation
Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has expanded the number of private waste operators in the state from 19 to 51. This change is part of a larger effort to improve sanitation and waste management in the area.
During a launch event for 65 Renewed Hope Environment Clubs in schools at The Dome in Akure, Aiyedatiwa announced the addition of 120 waste skips and two modern trucks for collecting waste. He also mentioned the return of the State Environmental Task Force after an 18-month pause and the revival of monthly environmental clean-up days.
Aiyedatiwa stated that these reforms aim to strengthen sanitation, protect public health, and promote environmental sustainability. He also shared plans to create a new policy on climate change and review current environmental laws.
The governor stressed the importance of environmental protection for public health, economic growth, and sustainable development. The newly established clubs will involve students in activities like tree planting, recycling, waste sorting, and conserving water.
His wife, Mrs. Esther Aiyedatiwa, encouraged students to act as environmental ambassadors. The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, supported the initiative and called for ongoing cooperation among government agencies, schools, and communities.
Dr. Tob Loko, the Commissioner for Environment, noted that these clubs will help extend environmental education beyond the classroom into community action. The reforms reflect the Aiyedatiwa administration’s commitment to creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Ondo State.
