NUJ Demands Urgent Action from Governor Aiyedatiwa Over Ondo Flooding Crisis

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council, has sent a strong appeal to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, urging his administration to proactively tackle the growing menace of flooding across the state before the heavy rains peak.

Following its monthly congress held at the NUJ Press Centre in Akure, the union issued a communiqué expressing deep concern over recent flood incidents that have devastated communities, damaged properties, and crippled movement.

Presided over by the State Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite, the council described the current flooding situation in various parts of the state as “pathetic”. The union warned that waiting for the height of the rainy season to deploy preventive measures would only lead to more preventable disasters.

To mitigate the impact, the NUJ charged both the state and local governments to immediately institutionalize a routine system for clearing erosion channels, expanding waterways, and unblocking drainage networks.

Beyond the immediate environmental hazards, the journalists also drew attention to the deplorable condition of several roads across the state. They noted that the lack of functional drainage systems on these bad roads significantly worsens the flooding crisis, leaving residents stranded whenever it rains.

The communiqué—drafted by a committee of media practitioners and signed by the State Secretary, Olaoluwa Meshack—emphasized that only sustained, proactive environmental policies and regular maintenance can save Ondo State residents from the looming dangers of the rainy season.
