Nigeria’s Redeemer’s Health Village Becomes TETFund Centre for Robotic Surgery Training
The Federal Government of Nigeria has designated the newly opened Redeemer’s Health Village (RHV) Robotic Surgery Academy as the country’s 29th Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Centre of Excellence. This announcement was made during the academy’s official inauguration on Thursday.
Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa stated that TETFund will cover the tuition fees for all qualified medical professionals enrolled in the academy. This initiative aims to enhance the country’s healthcare sector and reduce the need for medical professionals to seek training abroad.
The academy is a collaboration between RHV, RoboMed Global, the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), and Redeemer’s University. It is Nigeria’s first institute focused on advanced robotic and telesurgical operations.
Dr. Alausa highlighted the government’s commitment to improving medical education, noting that over 250 billion naira has been invested in the sector over the past two years. He also announced plans to increase the number of medical students admitted annually to 20,000 within the next two years.
The RHV Robotic Surgery Academy has been equipped with $4 million worth of robotic surgical systems, which will support both clinical services and training. The academy aims to train 400 certified specialists in areas such as Urology, General Surgery, and Gynaecology within two years.
In addition to training surgeons, the academy will also prepare operating theatre staff, biomedical engineers, and hospital administrators. It has recently received full accreditation as an academic medical school.
Dr. Obi Ekwenna, co-founder of RoboMed Global, emphasized the academy’s focus on a comprehensive training model that prioritizes teamwork and communication. The NPMCN will oversee academic standards and award diplomas upon completion of the training.
With this initiative, Redeemer’s Health Village aims to position West Africa as a leader in technology-driven patient care.
