Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister Named Vice-Chair of Commonwealth Group

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has been appointed as the Vice-Chair of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG). This appointment highlights Nigeria’s role in promoting democracy, human rights, and the rule of law within the Commonwealth.

The announcement came on Wednesday from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The appointment was made during a meeting of CMAG held alongside the 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2026) in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda. Leaders from the 56 Commonwealth member states, including King Charles III, attended the meeting.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s new role allows Nigeria to actively participate in discussions about democratic governance and the protection of fundamental rights among member countries. CMAG is a group of foreign ministers that focuses on maintaining the Commonwealth’s core political values.

Established in 1995, CMAG was created to respond to serious violations of democracy and human rights in member states. While it initially concentrated on military coups and unconstitutional government changes, its responsibilities have expanded to include issues like electoral irregularities and restrictions on political participation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that this appointment reflects Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to the Commonwealth and its principles of dialogue and cooperation among member nations.
