Nigeria to Observe Public Holiday on October 1 for Independence Day
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that Thursday, October 1, 2026, will be a public holiday. This day marks the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement from the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani. Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians both at home and abroad on this significant occasion.
In his message, the minister encouraged citizens to show unity, patriotism, and mutual respect during the celebrations. He emphasized that peace and stability are essential for national development and called on Nigerians to reflect the love for their country that was shown by its founding fathers.
Tunji-Ojo stated, “As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength.” He urged everyone to reaffirm their commitment to national unity and peaceful coexistence.
The minister also assured citizens that the Federal Government is dedicated to enhancing national security and public safety. He mentioned the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to create a better Nigeria for all.
