NDC Leader Criticizes Kalu’s Focus on Presidential Term Instead of Economic Issues
ENUGU — Peter Agubuzu, a leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, for his comments about a proposal for a single four-year presidential term for the South-East region. Agubuzu believes Kalu should concentrate on the economic difficulties facing Nigerians instead of discussing how long it might take for the South-East to have a President.
Kalu recently spoke at a rally for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu, where he expressed concerns about the South-East waiting decades for a President who would only serve for four years. This proposal is linked to NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi.
In response, Agubuzu, a senior lawyer, emphasized that the main issue for Nigerians is the worsening economy and the need for effective leadership to tackle these challenges. He stated that Obi’s proposal aims to shift Nigeria’s economy from relying on imports to focusing on production, which could help lift millions out of poverty.
Agubuzu pointed out that many Nigerians are frustrated with the current government, chanting “Tinubu Must Go” due to economic hardships. He argued that the focus should be on how to improve people’s lives rather than debating the timeline for an Igbo President.
He added that discussions about a single presidential term should also consider national unity and fairness in politics. Agubuzu urged leaders to listen to the everyday concerns of Nigerians and seek real solutions to the country’s economic problems, rather than getting caught up in regional political debates.
