Man Escapes Mob Attack After Attempting to Steal Electricity Cables in Kebbi

A man suspected of trying to steal electricity cables escaped a violent mob in Goru village, Kebbi State, on Tuesday morning. While climbing a power distribution pole, the suspect was caught off guard when electricity was unexpectedly restored.

According to an eyewitness named Malam Usman Goru, residents woke up to find the man hanging from the pole. He had reportedly climbed the pole during a power outage to steal cables. The sudden return of power posed a serious risk of electric shock, leaving him injured and stuck.

Goru described the scene as shocking, noting that the suspect was known in the community for similar thefts, though his identity was not confirmed. Community elders quickly called the police and workers from the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), who arrived to help the injured man.

The police’s prompt action prevented the situation from escalating, as some residents were ready to attack the suspect out of anger over the attempted theft. As he was being taken to the hospital, the crowd tried to beat him, but police intervened to disperse them.

This incident highlights the dangers of stealing electricity infrastructure, which can lead to serious injuries or even death. It also shows the risks of mob violence, as police efforts stopped residents from taking matters into their own hands. As of now, the man’s identity and condition after receiving medical care have not been confirmed.
