Lagos Government Makes Resident ID Mandatory for All Pupils in Public and Private Schools

The Lagos State Government has made registration with the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) an indispensable condition for admitting learners into both public and private schools across the state, beginning with the 2026/2027 academic session.

Under the directive, all basic and secondary school operators within the state must obtain and formally document a valid LASRRA registration number for every pupil as part of the standard admission and enrolment procedure starting September 14, 2026.

The policy, approved by the Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, is being spearheaded by the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA). According to the ministry, the initiative is a core component of the state’s broader agenda to build a centralized, verifiable electronic registry of learners to enhance governance and service delivery across the education sector.

Alli-Balogun explained that integrating students into the LASRRA database will strengthen identity verification, reduce administrative discrepancies in student records, and facilitate easy tracking as learners advance or transfer between institutions. He noted that accurate, real-time data on school-age demographics will provide policymakers with credible metrics to optimize classroom infrastructure, deploy teaching personnel efficiently, and make evidence-based funding decisions.

School administrators across the state have been instructed to incorporate the LASRRA number into their primary admission records and actively guide parents whose children are yet to be registered to finalize the process ahead of the new school term. The ministry also reminded school managements to manage learners’ biometric and demographic information securely and confidentially in strict adherence to data protection standards.

Reinforcing the mandate, the Director General of the OEQA, Dr. Sulaimon Olagoke Ogunmuyiwa, disclosed that his office is collaborating with LASRRA to establish smooth operational mechanisms for assigning unique identifiers and providing registration support to schools and families.

Ogunmuyiwa emphasized that compliance with the directive will be assessed as part of regular quality-assurance visits and school evaluations across all divisions, urging parents, guardians, and school proprietors to ensure all learners are fully captured before resumption.
