52 Inmates at Abeokuta Correctional Centre Begin Studies with NOUN and Bible College

Fifty-two inmates from the Abeokuta Correctional Centre in Ogun State, Nigeria, began their studies on Friday. They enrolled in programs at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and the West African College for Christian Missions. This initiative aims to help them prepare for life after incarceration.

The joint matriculation ceremony took place at the Old Abeokuta Custodial Centre. The theme was “Unlocking Potentials for Life After Incarceration Through Education, Resilience and Reintegration.” Abiyoye Kamoru Adesina, the Controller of Corrections for Ogun State, spoke at the event, highlighting the importance of education in the rehabilitation process.

Adesina mentioned that the program aligns with the 2019 Correctional Act, which focuses on reforming and reintegrating inmates into society. He also pointed out the challenges the center faces in providing education and skills training, urging for support from the government and other organizations.

Abayomi Arigbabu, the Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, attended the ceremony and emphasized the transformative power of education. He noted that the Ministry had sponsored 14 inmates to take the Basic Education Certificate Examination as part of efforts to ensure that everyone has access to education.

Arigbabu encouraged the inmates to approach their studies with dedication and discipline. He reminded them that education is not just about earning certificates but also about gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to become productive members of society.

Pastor Hezekiah Olujobi, who has personal experience with incarceration, also spoke at the event. He urged the inmates to view education as a key to their future and to take their studies seriously. The Olu of Imasayi, Oba Lukman Kuoye, reinforced this message, encouraging the inmates to prioritize their education despite their current circumstances.
