Infantino Welcomes Nigerian Delegation to Zurich, Pledges Solid Support for Football Reforms and Youth Talent

World football governing body FIFA has pledged its support to help overhaul and advance Nigerian football following high-level talks between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and a federal sports delegation at the Home of FIFA in Zurich, Switzerland.

The Nigerian contingent, led by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, held bilateral discussions with Infantino centered on structural reforms, corporate governance, and expanding sustainable development pathways for emerging talent across the country.

Reflecting on the meeting, Infantino commended the Nigerian leadership for their constructive approach and commitment to elevating the game. The FIFA chief emphasized that creating stronger grassroots pipelines and stable administrative foundations will be vital to unlocking the country’s vast sporting potential, noting that FIFA remains prepared to provide technical backing and institutional support to ensure football thrives in one of Africa’s most passionate sporting nations.

The consultative meeting comes at a critical juncture for Nigerian football administration, following the recent resignation of former NFF President Ibrahim Gusau and members of the federation’s executive committee. The cordial engagement in Zurich delivered a decisive blow to circulating rumors and unverified documents that claimed the world body was planning to penalize Nigeria over alleged state interference, demonstrating instead that mutual dialogue and collaboration between Zurich and Abuja remain intact.

Infantino also took time during the session to express confidence in Nigeria’s women’s youth teams, wishing the Falconets and Flamingos maximum success as they finalize preparations for their respective FIFA Under-20 and Under-17 Women’s World Cup tournaments.

The Nigerian delegation in Zurich featured prominent sports leaders, including NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade, former NFF President and ex-FIFA Council member Amaju Pinnick, alongside key federation administrators.
