INEC Warns of AI Threats to Nigeria’s 2027 Elections
The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised concerns about the potential dangers posed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the lead-up to Nigeria’s 2027 elections. He warned that AI could be used to create fake audio of election officials, falsify results, and spread misleading information aimed at discouraging voters.
This warning came during a National Summit held in Abuja, which focused on how technology can affect electoral integrity. The summit featured experts who discussed the need for coordinated efforts among electoral bodies, security agencies, and media organizations to combat these threats.
The INEC chairman noted that generative AI makes it easier to produce convincing fake content, which could confuse voters and lead to unrest. He identified critical moments in the election process, such as voter registration and result announcements, as particularly vulnerable to manipulation.
To address these challenges, INEC has established an AI Unit and is collaborating with partners, including the European Union, to prepare for potential information crises. The chairman emphasized the importance of educating voters not only on how to vote but also on how to verify the information they receive.
Former INEC chairman Prof. Attahiru Jega also spoke at the summit, advocating for the use of AI tools to provide verified information to voters. He highlighted the need for vigilance against misinformation while exploring the benefits of AI in enhancing electoral processes.
European Union officials echoed these concerns, warning that false information could undermine trust in the election results. They stressed the importance of establishing quick response mechanisms to counter misinformation before it spreads widely.
