INEC Promises Support for Voters with Disabilities in 2027 Anambra Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has committed to providing support to ensure that persons with disabilities (PWDs) can vote in the 2027 general elections in Anambra State. This promise was made during a program aimed at raising awareness about disability interventions in Awka.

Dr. Queen Elizabeth Agwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Anambra, stated that INEC is working to make voting easier for individuals with various disabilities, including those who are visually or hearing impaired. She mentioned that assistive devices like magnifying glasses and braille materials will be available to help these voters.

Agwu emphasized that PWDs will have priority access at polling stations to ensure they can vote without facing unnecessary difficulties. She encouraged PWDs to remain confident and involved in society, highlighting that disability should not prevent anyone from participating in the democratic process.

Comrade Ugochukwu Ernest Okeke, the chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities in Anambra, urged INEC to collaborate closely with disability organizations. He called for assessments of polling units to identify any accessibility issues and ensure that necessary support is in place before election day.

Lady Ifeoma Evangeline Chijioke, the Anambra State Director of the National Orientation Agency, praised INEC for its early engagement with stakeholders. She stressed the importance of public education and mutual trust in achieving credible elections. Chijioke also warned against misinformation and called for responsible behavior from all parties involved in the electoral process.
