Industry Titan Bala Wunti Appointed Pioneer CEO of World Energy Council Nigeria

The World Energy Council (WEC) Nigeria has appointed former top Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) executive, Dr. Bala Wunti, as its inaugural Chief Executive Officer.

The landmark announcement by the board of WEC Nigeria creates the first dedicated executive management structure for the organization since Nigeria joined the global body back in 1960. The move marks a strategic shift to transform the council from a traditional advisory group into a proactive platform that drives national energy policies, attracts global investments, and shapes energy security.

Wunti arrives at the post with over three decades of experience driving major reforms across the petroleum and energy sectors. As the former Chief Upstream Investment Officer at NNPC Upstream Investment Services (NUIMS), he managed the country’s multibillion-dollar joint venture and production-sharing portfolios. Among his notable achievements, Wunti led the successful renegotiation of deepwater offshore contracts to secure higher revenue for the government and championed cost-cutting strategies that drove upstream production expenses below $10 per barrel.

In his earlier role at the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC), Wunti spearheaded Operation White, a digital tracking system designed to eliminate fuel diversion and ensure transparency across fuel distribution networks. He also served as NNPC’s Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer, helping guide the corporation’s transition into a commercially driven enterprise.

In his acceptance remarks, Wunti highlighted that WEC Nigeria will function as a neutral, data-driven platform connecting government institutions, private investors, researchers, and industry leaders. He emphasized that the country’s energy strategy must focus on practical solutions—such as using natural gas as a transition fuel—to ensure energy security, affordability, and economic growth.

Energy analysts and industry stakeholders have welcomed the appointment, noting that Wunti’s extensive experience, combined with his training at Harvard Business School and Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government, positions him to strengthen Nigeria’s voice on the global energy stage and attract lasting investment into the power sector.
