Ibrahim Gusau Bows to Pressure and Resigns as NFF President

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau has officially resigned from his position, bringing an end to his nearly four-year leadership of the nation’s football governing body.

Addressing a world press conference at the NFF headquarters in Abuja, Gusau confirmed his departure alongside several other board members. His resignation concludes a tenure of three years and eleven months that came under relentless public backlash following a series of high-profile disappointments for Nigerian football on the global stage.

The leadership crisis within the federation reached a boiling point after consecutive sporting setbacks, most notably the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons’ historic failure to secure a spot at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Beyond results on the pitch, the NFF board faced intense pressure from security agencies and a fact-finding panel examining serious allegations of financial mismanagement and governance flaws regarding federal funds released for national teams.
