The government of Ghana has decided to formally apply to join the BRICS group, which includes major emerging economies. This announcement was made by Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa during a visit from India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
Ablakwa stated that Ghana has already requested support from India for its application. He emphasized that this move aims to broaden the country’s economic and diplomatic relationships.
BRICS, which stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, was founded in 2009 and has expanded to include countries like Ethiopia, Iran, and Indonesia in recent years. The group focuses on collaboration among nations in the global south.
According to Ablakwa, joining BRICS would provide Ghana with more economic options and strengthen its partnerships. Jaishankar expressed India’s support for Ghana’s ambitions but noted that the decision for membership would need approval from the entire BRICS group.
Other members of BRICS include Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
