Eva Marie Saint, the acclaimed actress who won an Oscar for her role in On the Waterfront, has died at the age of 102. She passed away peacefully from natural causes on Tuesday at her home in Los Angeles, surrounded by family, according to her representative Jeff Sanderson.
Born in New Jersey in 1924, Saint grew up in a Quaker family. She began her career in radio and television before gaining fame in the early 1950s. Her breakthrough came in 1954 with her film debut in On the Waterfront, where she starred alongside Marlon Brando. Her performance as Edie Doyle earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, marking her as a leading figure in Hollywood.
Saint’s career continued to flourish with notable films like North by Northwest, where she played Eve Kendall opposite Cary Grant. This film, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, became one of her most recognized works. Throughout her career, she appeared in various productions, including A Hatful of Rain and Raintree County.
In addition to her film work, Saint won an Emmy Award in 1990 for her role in the miniseries People Like Us. She also introduced herself to a new generation when she played Martha Kent, Superman’s adoptive mother, in the 2006 film Superman Returns.
Saint reflected on her long life and career, saying that her experiences helped her grow as an actress. She was married to actor Jeffrey Hayden for 65 years until his passing in 2016 and is survived by their two children.
