Enugu Catholic Diocese Rejects Inclusion of Bishop in APC Campaign Council

The Catholic Diocese of Enugu has rejected the inclusion of Auxiliary Bishop Most Rev. Ernest Anezichukwu Obodo in the All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council for Enugu State. The Diocese claims his name was added without his knowledge or permission.

The Diocese issued a statement on October 30, 2026, demanding the immediate removal of the bishop’s name and those of other priests who were also included without authorization. Bishop Obodo was reportedly named the Director of the Faith-Based Campaign Group in the APC.

In the statement, signed by Very Rev. Fr. Wilfred Chidi Agubuchie, the Diocesan Chancellor, the Diocese described this action as misleading and harmful to the bishop’s reputation. They stated that it was a “malicious act of misrepresentation and defamation” that undermined his integrity.

The Diocese emphasized that the Catholic Church does not engage in political activities or endorse political parties. They are committed to their spiritual mission and promoting peace and justice.

While acknowledging that individual Christians can participate in civic activities, the Diocese warned against using the Church’s name or the identities of its ministers for political gain. They reiterated their demand for the removal of Bishop Obodo’s name from the campaign list and warned that unauthorized use of his name for political purposes could lead to legal action.

The Diocese concluded by asserting that the Catholic Church is not a political organization and should not be presented as one.
