Elena Rybakina Clinches Year-End Top Ranking After Tokyo Victory

Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan celebrated a significant achievement on October 29, 2026, by winning the WTA Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. She defeated fellow Kazakh player Yulia Putintseva with a score of 6-2, 6-3, ensuring she ends the year as the world number one.

This victory follows Rybakina’s first Grand Slam title at the US Open last month, where she took the top spot in women’s tennis rankings, replacing Aryna Sabalenka. Rybakina has also won the Australian Open earlier this year, bringing her total Grand Slam titles to three.

Rybakina expressed her joy about her ranking, saying, “It means a lot; this is something we worked for with the team.” She highlighted the competitiveness among top players and her happiness in achieving this milestone.

The match in Tokyo lasted 70 minutes, during which Rybakina served six aces and faced only one break point, which she successfully defended. She will next compete against Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the quarter-finals, whom she recently defeated in the Ningbo final.

Despite her busy schedule, Rybakina mentioned she has not had much time to explore Tokyo but is interested in a new hobby involving Pokémon cards, inspired by her coach.
