Tinubu Highlights Education as Catalyst for Economic Growth at FUTO Convocation
President Bola Tinubu underscored the critical role of quality education in driving Nigeria’s economic development during the 36th Convocation of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), on Saturday. Represented by Prof. Florence Obi, Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to advancing education as a cornerstone for national progress.
In his goodwill message, the president emphasized that education remains pivotal for alleviating poverty and fostering sustainable growth.
“Education is a major fulcrum for national development; it is a catalyst for alleviating poverty and promoting economic growth and development,” Tinubu said.
He highlighted that education is one of the eight priority areas of his administration, alongside economy, security, agriculture, energy, infrastructure, and health.
Tinubu noted the government’s strategic initiatives, including the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund. “A total of ₦33 billion was allocated to launch the programme this year, benefiting six pilot universities from each geopolitical zone,” he disclosed. The fund aims to provide students with loans for tuition and personal expenses, ensuring greater access to higher education.
The president also advised graduates to diversify their skills by exploring opportunities in agriculture, vocational training, and technology. “The era of readily available white-collar jobs is behind us. I encourage you to tap into the potentials in agriculture, vocational skills, and information technology to add value to yourself and the nation,” he stated.
Tinubu highlighted the federal government’s ongoing investments in upgrading FUTO’s infrastructure and research capabilities to address national challenges effectively.
The convocation ceremony also featured the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on notable figures, including First Lady Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, and Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Zulum.
The event marked another step in aligning education with national development goals, emphasizing its pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s future.
