Edo State Faces Blackout as Electricity Workers Continue Strike Against BEDC

Government offices and businesses in Edo State are experiencing a major blackout as electricity workers continue their strike against BEDC Electricity Plc. This industrial action began on Monday and has now entered its third day, causing widespread disruptions.

At the Edo State Secretariat in Benin City, the effects of the blackout are clear. Many government workers are using generators to keep their offices running. However, some employees are struggling to reach their offices on higher floors because the elevators are not working without electricity.

The blackout is not just affecting government buildings; private businesses and commercial centers are also impacted. Some residents and business owners are looking into solar energy as an alternative to the unreliable public electricity supply.

The strike highlights ongoing disputes between BEDC management and the workers’ union, particularly regarding employee pay and benefits. A BEDC employee, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that the company has lost around N2 billion since the strike started. Despite efforts to resolve the situation through meetings with union leaders and security agencies, no agreement has been reached.

The union’s leadership claims that workers have not received a salary increase since 2013 and are owed five years of long-service award payments. The State Chairman of the National Union of Electricity Employees, Uwumarogie Owenaze William, accused management of misrepresenting past discussions and failing to address their concerns.

The Edo State Government is aware of the situation and is working to mediate between the electricity company and its employees. The Commissioner for Energy, Paul Usenbo, has been involved in discussions aimed at resolving the issues, focusing on salary adjustments as a key point of contention.
