Christine Lagarde to Leave ECB Presidency in February 2027

Christine Lagarde, the President of the European Central Bank (ECB), has announced she will resign on February 7, 2027. This decision comes months before her term officially ends in October 2027, according to a statement from the ECB.

Lagarde informed the Governing Council and the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, about her decision. Her early departure allows European leaders to appoint a new ECB president before the upcoming French presidential elections in April, where candidates skeptical of the euro are currently leading in polls.

In a recent interview, Lagarde stated that she would not seek the presidency of France, calling it “not a good idea.” Speculation has been rife about her future, with some suggesting she may take on a role at the World Economic Forum, which hosts an annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

Lagarde has been at the helm of the ECB since November 2019. Her leadership has spanned significant events, including the Covid-19 pandemic and the inflation surge following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which led to rising energy costs.

Antonio Costa praised Lagarde’s leadership during challenging times, highlighting her steady guidance through a global pandemic, a war in Europe, and economic instability. He announced that the search for her successor would begin immediately to ensure a smooth transition.
