Aisha Binani Aims for Adamawa Governorship Again in 2027 After Close 2023 Race

Aisha Dahiru Binani is preparing to run for governor of Adamawa State again in 2027. In 2023, she came very close to winning, making history as the first woman to nearly secure the governorship in the northern region of Nigeria. She ran as a candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and ended up in a supplementary election, losing to the incumbent, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.

Now, Binani is back on the ballot, this time representing the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC). The election is scheduled for February 6, 2027. She will face several opponents, including Chief Murice Vunobokki from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Alh Ahamed Tijjani from the APC.

After her close loss in 2023, Binani remained a significant figure in Adamawa politics. However, she left the APC due to internal issues and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) before moving to the NDC. She has stated that she believes the NDC is committed to good governance.

In her campaign, Binani is focusing on grassroots support, particularly in Southern Adamawa, where she has been meeting with local leaders and communities. She has chosen Hon. Emmanuel Dominic Mapeo as her running mate, aiming to strengthen her appeal in the southern region, which has historically felt marginalized.

Despite her strong recognition among voters, Binani faces challenges. The NDC is still a relatively new party in Adamawa, and she needs to build a solid support structure quickly. Additionally, her history of changing parties may raise questions about her consistency among voters.

As the election approaches, Binani’s ability to mobilize support and address local concerns will be crucial. She has a strong base among women and youth, but will need to ensure high voter turnout in her strongholds while keeping the opposition in check. The upcoming election will test her strategy and the NDC’s influence in the state.
