Adebayo Promises to Reform Nigeria’s Criminal Justice System Ahead of 2027 Election
Prince Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate for the Social Democratic Party, has pledged to reform Nigeria’s criminal justice system if he wins the election in 2027. He made this statement during a lecture in Lagos, where he criticized the current system for favoring wealthy criminals and corrupt officials while punishing the poor for minor offenses.
Adebayo spoke at an event organized by the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, emphasizing that the justice system often appears to be run by individuals viewed as criminals by society. He expressed concern that this perception erodes public trust and leads to a culture where people seek justice on their own.
He highlighted a stark contrast in how justice is served, pointing out that a person who steals a small amount can face severe penalties, while those who commit large-scale corruption often evade serious consequences. Adebayo stated, “We cannot have a criminal justice system run by criminals,” and promised that his administration would ensure equal justice for all, protecting the innocent and punishing wrongdoers.
During his address, Adebayo also discussed the importance of protecting human rights, even when it is unpopular. He argued that defending the rights of those considered “monsters” is essential for safeguarding the rights of everyone. He referenced historical examples to illustrate that a society’s commitment to human rights is measured by how it treats those who are most despised.
Adebayo urged civil society to address pressing issues such as out-of-school children and electoral fraud, rather than engaging in what he termed “prebendal activism.” He concluded by criticizing the current government for allegedly preparing to manipulate the upcoming elections, claiming it cannot rely on its performance to win votes.
