INEC Confirms Over 2.8 Million Registered Voters for Anambra Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the final number of registered voters for the upcoming Anambra governorship election, scheduled for Saturday, November 8, 2025. The electoral body has announced that over 2.8 million citizens are eligible to vote in the poll.

The figure was disclosed by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Sam Olumekun, in a statement following the Commission’s weekly meeting. According to Olumekun, the total number of registered voters is a result of the recently concluded Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which added 168,187 new registrants to the existing voter database.

The new additions represent a significant demographic shift, as Olumekun’s report showed that the new registrants are primarily young people. A breakdown of the data revealed that 97,832, or 58% of the new registrants, were female, while 70,355, or 42%, were male. In terms of age, a majority of the new registrants—90,763, or 53.97%—were young people between the ages of 18 and 34. The data also indicated that 36.92% of the new voters are businesspeople, and 26.31% are students.

Mr. Olumekun assured the public that the Commission is following its timetable and schedule of activities for the election. He stated that the next crucial step is the display of the preliminary register of the new voters in all 326 wards across the state, which is a mandatory process for claims and objections by citizens before the final register is published.

With the final list of candidates for the election already published and campaign activities underway, INEC leadership has urged security agencies to replicate the success of recent elections, such as the Ondo governorship poll, to ensure a peaceful and credible process in Anambra. With 5,720 polling units across the state, INEC has reiterated its readiness to conduct a seamless and transparent election that will reflect the will of the people.
