Human Rights Group Calls for Investigation into Violence in Southern Kaduna
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) is asking the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the recent violence in Southern Kaduna. This call comes after a series of attacks and kidnappings in the area, which have raised concerns about possible political motives.
HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, expressed worry about the timing of these attacks, especially since Governor Uba Sani has chosen a Christian from Southern Kaduna as his running mate for the upcoming 2027 governorship election. The group believes that the circumstances surrounding the violence need urgent investigation.
Recent reports indicate that two people were killed and 20 others were abducted in the Akwando community on November 4. This information was shared by local leaders from the Kuturmi Unity Development Association. HURIWA also noted previous attacks, including one on Easter Sunday, which resulted in multiple deaths and further kidnappings.
The group highlighted that armed groups are allegedly imposing illegal fees on residents and limiting their access to farmland, which they view as a violation of human rights. They are calling for the immediate rescue of those abducted and for the authorities to take action against those responsible for the violence.
Despite these issues, HURIWA commended Governor Uba Sani for his efforts to combat terrorism and improve security in Kaduna State. They urged him to continue working with security agencies and community leaders to foster peace.
The association also called on national leaders, including President Bola Tinubu and the Inspector-General of Police, to treat the recent attacks as a serious security issue. They are advocating for better security measures in vulnerable communities and for humanitarian aid to support those affected by the violence.
