Spanish Footballers Request Postponement of Weekend Matches After Player’s Death

Spanish footballers are asking for all weekend matches to be postponed following the death of Jesús de Miguel, a player for Tenerife. The Spanish footballers’ union, AFE, made this request on Thursday, stating that players feel it is not appropriate to play under the current emotional circumstances.

The AFE emphasized that players from all divisions are united in their call to suspend the games out of respect for De Miguel. In their statement, they expressed deep sorrow over his passing and highlighted that the conditions are not suitable for competition.

Already, Tenerife’s match against Granada and Andorra’s game against Mallorca have been postponed. Several midweek cup matches were also canceled after De Miguel’s death. However, clubs participating in European competitions continued to play this week, observing a minute of silence in his memory during the matches.

De Miguel joined Tenerife in the summer of 2025. His death has led to an outpouring of tributes from across the football community. Andorra goalkeeper Owono described the loss as devastating, sharing his pain and thoughts for De Miguel’s family and loved ones.

Mourners have gathered at Tenerife’s Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez to pay their respects, laying flowers and lighting candles beneath a tribute image of De Miguel. His family has thanked everyone for their support but has requested privacy as they grieve.

The AFE is now urging Spanish football authorities to consider the players’ request and postpone the remaining weekend fixtures as a sign of respect for the late player.
