Social Democratic Party Rejects Coalition and Prepares for 2027 Elections

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has announced that it will participate in the 2027 general elections. The party is distancing itself from a proposed group called the ‘Rainbow Coalition’ and insists it will not enter any political arrangement that could compromise its identity.

During a press conference in Abuja, SDP’s National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Gombe, accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of trying to weaken opposition parties ahead of the elections. He stated that the SDP has no interest in joining any group that would align its candidates with the ruling party.

Gombe claimed that the APC is attempting to regain public trust by wooing opposition members through the proposed coalition. He emphasized that the SDP is committed to presenting credible alternatives to voters, highlighting its presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, and running mate, Prof. Usman Bugaje.

The SDP is also working with other opposition parties to ensure credible elections. This includes training party agents and setting up common rooms to protect votes at polling places. Gombe assured that the SDP will act independently and will not support the APC in any way.

He mentioned that any party member who engages in the proposed coalition without permission will face disciplinary action. The recent meeting with the party’s governorship candidates was aimed at strengthening electoral strategies and improving the party’s chances in the upcoming elections.

Concerns were also raised about the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not publishing the names of some SDP candidates, a matter that is currently in court. Gombe criticized the commission for not recognizing the party’s candidates despite following necessary procedures.

In closing, Gombe called for fairness from the judiciary, security agencies, and INEC to protect the democratic process. He expressed confidence that Nigerians are looking for alternatives to the current government and that the SDP will focus on improving citizens’ welfare.
