Clashes Erupt Between German Police and Protesters During Youth-Led Demonstrations

German police and protesters clashed across the country on Saturday after large youth-led demonstrations. The protests, organized by the group ‘GenZ regelt!’ (Gen Z has got this!), saw tens of thousands of participants. While the day started peacefully, violence broke out in the evening.

Masked protesters threw fireworks, stones, and bottles at police in cities like Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Cologne. In response, police used water cannons and pepper spray to disperse the crowds. Police reported several officers were injured during the unrest.

Earlier in the day, the protests had a festive atmosphere, with some participants dressed in Halloween costumes. They carried signs demanding political change and expressing solidarity with similar movements in France and Italy.

Many protesters voiced their frustrations about issues such as the high cost of living, poor school conditions, and government spending cuts. They are also concerned about increased military spending and a new service model that could lead to conscription.

Despite the violence later in the day, police noted that the main protests had been largely peaceful. They emphasized that they intervened decisively when the situation escalated. Some businesses took precautions by boarding up windows ahead of the protests to prevent looting.

The ‘GenZ regelt!’ movement has distanced itself from violence, stating that extremist groups and hate speech are not welcome in their protests. The demonstrations in Germany coincided with ongoing protests in France, raising concerns about potential radical involvement in the German events.
