INEC Addresses Concerns Over AI-Generated Photos in Voter Register

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified that the preliminary voter register on its website is the same as the one displayed across the country in October. This statement comes in response to worries about possible AI-generated photos found in the register.

INEC published the online register on October 26, 2026, which reflects the original records shown at Registration Areas from October 9 to 15. Mohammed Kudu Haruna, who leads INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, mentioned that some questionable records were flagged for further review during the physical display.

The commission has begun examining these records and is taking steps to correct any issues based on established procedures. They emphasized that the online register does not include all ongoing data-cleaning efforts and is not the final certified version.

INEC explained that the purpose of the Display, Claims and Objections exercise is to allow the public to review the register, identify any mistakes, and make necessary corrections before the final certification.

Additionally, INEC is looking into the suspicious photographs to determine if there were any technical or procedural errors. They assured that appropriate actions will be taken based on the findings from their investigation.

The commission praised citizens and stakeholders for raising concerns about the AI-generated images, stating that public scrutiny is essential for enhancing the accuracy and trustworthiness of the voter register. INEC is committed to completing the verification and data-cleaning processes before the final Register of Voters is certified on December 15, 2026.
