Court Orders El-Rufai to Defend Himself in Phone Tapping Case
The Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled against former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai in a case involving alleged illegal phone tapping. The court’s decision came on Monday when Justice Joyce Abdulmalik dismissed El-Rufai’s request to drop the case.
The court found that the Department of State Services (DSS) provided enough evidence for the trial to continue. This means El-Rufai must now present his defense against the charges. He is the only person facing these allegations.
According to reports, the DSS had already finished presenting its case by calling two witnesses. El-Rufai’s lawyer, Akinyemi Aremu, argued that the prosecution did not prove its case well enough to require a defense from El-Rufai.
On the other hand, the DSS lawyer, Oluwole Aladedoye, countered this argument. He pointed out that the defense had not addressed a key piece of evidence that the prosecution claimed showed El-Rufai admitted to tapping the phone of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
With this ruling, the court has stated that the prosecution has established a preliminary case against El-Rufai, and he is now required to respond to the charges.
