Court Grants Bail to Man Detained Over Facebook Post About Taraba Governor

The Federal High Court in Jalingo has granted bail to Fonya Sule, a Facebook user who was held for a month in the Jalingo Correctional Centre. His detention stemmed from a complaint filed by the Taraba State Government regarding a Facebook post he made.

The complaint was lodged on September 30, 2026, after Sule posted a message on August 12, 2026. In his post, he warned Hajiya Zainab Ibrahim, the deputy governorship candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), to be cautious around Governor Agbu Kefas, suggesting that he could get her pregnant.

Sule was arrested the following week and accused of criminal defamation against both the governor and his running mate. The state claimed that his post was an attempt to harm their reputations.

His lawyer, Pius Danba Pius, argued in court that the charges were bailable and that the prosecution had not yet proven their case. The Federal High Court agreed and granted Sule bail, emphasizing that he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
