Super Eagles Face Selection Woes Ahead of AFCON Qualifier Against Guinea-Bissau

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are experiencing player selection challenges ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea-Bissau. The match is set for September 29 at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro in Bissau, starting at 5 PM Nigerian time.

Coach Eric Chelle is particularly concerned about George Ilenikhena, Tolu Arokodare, and Akor Adams, who are doubtful for the upcoming game. Ilenikhena, who recently scored in his international debut, is facing a fitness issue that could prevent him from playing. He scored Nigeria’s equalizer in a recent match against Madagascar.

During a press conference, Chelle mentioned that Ilenikhena would be evaluated after the last training session. He also noted that a few other players in the squad have fallen ill, although he did not provide their names.

Akor Adams is also listed as doubtful due to a fitness problem. Both he and Ilenikhena were key players in Nigeria’s opening qualifier against Madagascar. The situation is made more complicated by the absence of Victor Osimhen, who is unavailable due to medical treatment.

With fewer attacking options, Chelle may need to adjust his lineup. Players like Taiwo Awoniyi, Moses Usor, and Ademola Lookman are available to step in, with Usor having shown promise in his debut against Madagascar.

Despite these concerns, all 24 players participated in the team’s training session at the match venue. Chelle is expected to finalize his decisions after the last training session before the important Group L match, where both Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau will be looking to build on their winning starts in the qualifying campaign.
