Oba of Benin Celebrates 10 Years on the Throne with Thanksgiving Service
The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, celebrated his 10th coronation anniversary with a thanksgiving service on Tuesday at the Holy Arousa Church in Benin City, Edo State. A large crowd gathered to witness the event, following the monarch as he made his way to the church.
Residents and traders lined Akpakpava Road to catch a glimpse of the procession, which included Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo. Traditional praise singers and drummers entertained the crowd, while high-ranking chiefs and notable figures wore traditional red-and-white clothing.
The Holy Arousa Church, which dates back to the 15th century and was built by the Portuguese, is overseen by Oba Ewuare II and serves as his place of worship. During the service, the church’s priest, Chief Igbinoghodua Edebiri, delivered a sermon in the Edo language, urging unity among worshippers.
Accompanied by his wives, the Oba approached the altar to give thanks. Edo State Commissioner for Mining, Mr. Kayode Iriabekhai, spoke at the event, highlighting the importance of celebrating a ruler who has fostered peace in the state. He also praised the monarch for his support of Governor Okpebholo since the governor took office.
