Anambra First Lady’s Aide Clarifies Ties, Denies Peter Obi Is Godfather to Soludo’s Children

The Anambra State Government has stepped in to correct public impressions regarding familial connections between former Governor Peter Obi and the current state chief executive, Professor Chukwuma Soludo.

The clarification came via an official statement issued by Daniel Ezeigwe, media aide to the Anambra State First Lady, Dr. Nonye Soludo. The response followed a widely circulated video from the 22nd Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu, where Obi asserted that he and his wife maintained a close personal bond with the Soludo family, describing themselves as “godparents” to the governor’s children to demonstrate that political differences had not fractured their personal rapport.

However, the First Lady’s office countered the assertion, stating clearly that neither Peter Obi nor Professor Soludo holds a direct godparent role over the other’s children.

“We hereby state clearly that the claim, as presented, is false,” the statement read. “For the avoidance of doubt: Mr. Peter Obi is not a godfather to any of the children of Professor Chukwuma and Dr. Nonye Soludo.”

Providing the exact context of their cross-family relationships, the statement explained that Dr. Nonye Soludo acts as the confirmation godmother to one of Peter Obi’s daughters, whereas Mrs. Margaret Obi serves as the baptismal godmother to one of Governor Soludo’s daughters.

While attributing Obi’s comments to a likely slip of the tongue during his public address, the aide stressed the necessity of correcting the narrative due to intensive media inquiries. The clarification comes amid a backdrop of heated political exchanges and economic debates between supporters of both political figures ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle, even as aides maintain that the underlying personal relations between the two families remain devoid of malice.
