10-Man Atletico Madrid Suffer Fourth Consecutive League Defeat in 3-2 Loss at Elche; Andre Silva Brace Lifts Hosts Out of Relegation Zone

Atletico Madrid’s disappointing domestic run continued on Wednesday evening as they fell to a 3-2 defeat against Elche at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero. The result marks the fourth straight league loss for Diego Simeone’s side, a run of form not seen at the club since December 2021, and further complicates their momentum ahead of next week’s Champions League semi-final.

The match began positively for the visitors, with Nicolas Gonzalez finding the net in the 10th minute following a rapid counter-attack orchestrated by Rodrigo Mendoza. However, the lead was short-lived. Elche equalized eight minutes later when David Affengruber prodded home from close range after the Atletico defense failed to clear a corner.

The game’s turning point arrived in the 30th minute. Thiago Almada was dispossessed on the edge of his own box and subsequently pulled back Affengruber inside the penalty area. The referee issued a straight red card for the denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and awarded a penalty, which Andre Silva converted to put Elche ahead. Although Gonzalez equalized almost immediately for 10-man Atletico with a header that was confirmed via VAR, the numerical disadvantage eventually told.

In the 75th minute, Andre Silva secured his second goal of the night, finishing from close range after Jan Oblak had initially saved an Affengruber header. Elche remained disciplined in the closing stages to secure a vital three points in their fight against relegation, moving them two points clear of the drop zone.

Diego Simeone, who fielded a largely experimental side to rest key players following a grueling 120-minute Copa del Rey final last Saturday, accepted full responsibility for the result. While Atletico remains comfortable in fourth place, the focus now shifts entirely to the European stage. The club is scheduled to host Arsenal next Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, a fixture that has now taken on even greater significance as their sole remaining path to silverware this season.
