Seyi Tinubu Installed as ‘Okanlòmo of Eyọ Ọba’ in Lagos Just Days After Bagging Major Chieftaincy Title from Alaafin of Oyo

The son of the President, Seyi Tinubu, has further solidified his standing within the Yoruba traditional institution after being conferred with the prestigious title of Okanlòmo of Eyọ Ọba Alakẹtẹ Pupa, Laba Ẹkun in Lagos.

The colorful installation, held on Friday, December 26, 2025, saw the city’s political and traditional elite gather to witness the formal induction of the lawyer and entrepreneur into the inner circles of the Eyo cultural heritage. The ceremony took place just 24 hours before the commencement of the 2025 Eyo Festival, an ancient spiritual rite and the pinnacle of Lagosian traditional displays.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who graced the event, took to social media to celebrate the new chief. “I warmly congratulate Barrister Oluwaseyi Tinubu on his installation,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “This honour reflects service, character, and commitment to our culture and people. I wish him continued strength and clarity as he carries the responsibilities and expectations that come with this new role.”

The title “Okanlòmo,” which translates to “the beloved child,” is reserved for individuals perceived as pillars of support and progress within the community. For Seyi Tinubu, this marks a remarkable week of cultural recognition; only five days ago, the Alaafin of Oyo bestowed upon him the title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland at a historic ceremony in the ancient Oyo town.

The Lagos installation also recognized his wife, Layal Tinubu, who was conferred with a matching honorary title, emphasizing the couple’s active engagement in social and philanthropic efforts across the state.

Traditionalists in Isale Eko noted that the Laba Ẹkun group, under which Seyi was installed, is one of the most revered among the five deity groups (Orisha) of the Eyo. His appointment is seen by many as a symbolic bridge between the modern political legacy of the Tinubu family and the deep-rooted cultural preservation of the Lagos monarchy.

As the white-clad Eyo masquerades prepare to take over the streets of Lagos Island today, the newly crowned Okanlòmo is expected to play a visible role in the festivities, signaling a new chapter of youth leadership within the state’s traditional architecture.
