FG Targets ₦160 Billion Output Value From 2025/2026 Dry Season Wheat Production, Registers 80,000 Farmers

The Federal Government today, Saturday, November 15, 2025, launched the 2025/2026 dry season wheat production programme under the National Agricultural Growth and Agro-Pocket Project (NAGSAP), revealing an ambitious target of generating an output value of approximately ₦160 billion.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, flagged off the programme in Jere Local Government Area of Borno State. The Minister disclosed that the current cycle is targeting 80,000 registered farmers across 16 states of the federation, with a total of 40,000 hectares of land allocated for cultivation.

The move is a direct response to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency on food security, prioritizing local production to reduce Nigeria’s heavy reliance on imported wheat, which drains billions of naira in foreign exchange annually.

Commitment to Quality and Yields

Minister Kyari emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that farmers have access to the necessary support and inputs to achieve optimal yields.

“For the current 2025/2026 season, the programme is targeting 80,000 registered farmers with an expected output value of approximately ₦160 billion,” Kyari stated. He noted that the success of previous cycles, which saw output values increase, provides confidence in the current target.

Furthermore, the government is strengthening the quality control mechanism. The Minister confirmed that Agricultural Extension Agents will be deployed to guide farmers on modern agronomic practices, and Fertiliser and Seed Quality Control Officers will ensure that all inputs delivered meet required standards, thereby guaranteeing higher productivity and improved yields.

The wheat component of the NAGSAP programme now covers states from the North to the South, including Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Cross River, Gombe, Kano, and Zamfara, demonstrating a broadened effort to cultivate wheat wherever feasible across the country and move Nigeria closer to self-sufficiency in this critical staple.
