2026 Ballon d’Or Ceremony Set for October: Top Contenders Revealed
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled for Monday, October 26, at the London Palladium Theatre, starting at 8 pm GMT (9 pm Nigerian time). This event marks the 70th anniversary of the award, which honors the best football player in the world.
Among the leading candidates for this year’s award are Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappé, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Each player has made a strong case for why they should be recognized as the best.
Harry Kane had an impressive season, scoring 73 goals in 65 matches for his club and country. He played a key role in helping Bayern Munich win both the German league and cup. However, his team’s early exit from the Champions League may impact his chances.
Lamine Yamal also stands out with his performance for Barcelona, where he achieved 24 goals and 17 assists, totaling 41 contributions to his team’s scoring in the 2025/26 season.
Kylian Mbappé is another strong contender after a successful season with Real Madrid, scoring 42 goals in 44 matches, including 25 in La Liga and 15 in the Champions League. He also excelled at the 2026 World Cup, scoring 10 goals and winning the Golden Boot.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has made his mark with Paris Saint-Germain, contributing to their Champions League victory with 19 goals and 10 assists, marking his best season yet.
The list of nominees also includes last year’s winner Ousmane Dembélé, eight-time winner Lionel Messi, and 2024 recipient Rodri, making the competition even more exciting.
This will be the first time London hosts the Ballon d’Or ceremony, aligning with the award’s anniversary and honoring Stanley Matthews, the first-ever winner in 1956.
