Yobe State Declares Tuesday Work-Free Day in Honour of Late President Buhari

In a mark of profound respect and mourning for former President Muhammadu Buhari, the Yobe State Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a work-free day across the state. This announcement aligns with the nationwide solemnity following the death of the former leader.

The declaration was approved by Governor Mai Mala Buni on Monday, following the news of President Buhari’s passing in London on Sunday at the age of 82. The work-free day is intended to allow the people of Yobe State to dedicate themselves to prayers for the repose of the soul of the former president. Governor Buni specifically called on Imams to utilize the day for special prayers in their respective mosques.

Governor Buni praised the late President Buhari’s significant contributions, particularly to the North-East region. “He was a leader who did so much to ensure the return of security to Yobe State and the North East in general; he deserves this special honour from the people of the state,” Governor Buni stated.

Earlier in a condolence message, Governor Buni had described the late Buhari as a “great patriot who spent most of his life working for the unity and progress of Nigeria.” He further lauded Buhari as a disciplinarian, a leader of integrity, and a figure with “unlimited passion for the development of the nation.”

The state’s decision follows a similar declaration by the Federal Government, which also announced Tuesday as a public holiday to honour Buhari. Furthermore, the Northwest Governors Forum had also declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday across all seven states in their region as part of the collective mourning.

Former President Buhari is scheduled to be buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday, after his body is repatriated from the United Kingdom. Yobe, like other states, joins the nation in observing the mourning period and honouring a leader who served Nigeria in various capacities for decades.
