Wike Challenges Amaechi on $10 Million Fumigation Project in Rivers State

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has asked Rotimi Amaechi, the African Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate, to clarify the results of a $10 million fumigation project that took place during Amaechi’s time as governor of Rivers State.

Wike made this request during a media chat on Tuesday. He responded to questions about his ongoing criticism of Amaechi, stating that he is not targeting the former governor. Instead, he believes that Amaechi’s ambition to become Nigeria’s vice-president makes it necessary for people to examine his past actions.

“You can’t just want to run for a position without anybody telling you the past. So, let Nigerians judge if all these things are correct,” Wike said. He specifically pointed out a promise Amaechi made to eliminate mosquitoes and malaria in Rivers State through the fumigation project, which involved paying a Cuban company $10 million.

Wike challenged Amaechi to explain the effectiveness of the fumigation, asking, “Could you tell Nigerians what is the effect of that fumigation?” He also criticized Amaechi for making serious allegations against President Bola Tinubu, including calling him a thief. Wike stressed that such claims should be scrutinized, as they can have serious consequences for the country.

While Wike acknowledged that Amaechi has the right to criticize Tinubu, he emphasized that the former governor must also be accountable for his own statements and actions as he campaigns for political office.
